Mindfulness Wonder Walk
This beautiful trail, abounding with views of bogs and hillsides, features signs that invite the hiker to practice mindfulness techniques. It's a great way to slow down and ground yourself in nature for a bit!
Directions: From Trailhead B, hike out until you reach intersection 12, take a right and you will find the Mindfulness Wonder Walk on the left.
Distance/Time: 0.7 miles roundtrip, 30-60 minutes


Interpretive Center
The Interpretive Center is open to the public and has a nice museum filled with information about the geologic and glacial history of the land, cultural history of the area, animal mounts and furs, and interactive touch tables. Our gift store (located in the Interpretive Center) is open only be request.
Time: 15-60 minutes
Bird Observatory
Head out to the bird observatory during the winter to enjoy some time watching the birds. We keep the bird feeders out during the winter months. You can see lots of chickadees, nuthatches, woodpeckers, blue jays, and more!
Directions: The footpath starts at Trailhead A, right by the Interpretive Center.
Distance/Time: 0.4 miles roundtrip, 15-30 minutes.


Martha Sweatt Reed Preserve
Bring a lunch or hot drink to the picnic tables and wildlife observation shelter at the Martha Sweatt Reed Preserve! This is a gorgeous spot to soak in the beauty of Bass Pond and Big Deep Lake.
Directions: Walk along the paved trail starting at Trailhead A along the west side of Bass Pond.
Distance/Time: 0.6 miles roundtrip, 15-30 minutes
Bass Pond Hike
An all-time favorite! This loop has stunning views of Bass Pond, as well as Big Deep Lake. There are several benches along the way. Beavers (and their lodges and dams) can be seen on the pond, a purple martin house sits on the north side, and a dock sits on Bass Pond.
Directions: The footpath starts at Trailhead A, right by the Interpretive Center.
Distance/Time: 0.8 miles, 15-30 minutes


Harrington Memorial Pine Stand Trail
Perfect for hiking or snowshoeing, this trail features interpretive signs that share information about forestry management and the importance of old growth forests.
Directions: Along the driveway, there is a parking pull-off between intersections 17 and 19. There are two sections of trail, one on either side of the driveway.
Distance/Time: 0.55 miles, 15-30 minutes

Bog Boardwalk
A boardwalk on a Northwoods bog is a great place to check out an amazing ecosystem up close and personal! Borrow a "Take & Learn" bag from the Interpretive Center to identify bog plants and learn about bog mummies.
Directions: From the Interpretive Center, head towards the east side of Bass Pond. Head towards intersection 3 and take a right, then take the stairs leading down to the boardwalk.
Distance/Time: 1.5 miles roundtrip, 60-120 minutes

Observation Tower
Our 55 foot observation tower is an amazing way to take in the views of Deep Portage! The tower is locked, please call ahead or check in with the front desk to borrow a key.
Directions: Walk down the driveway past the dirt parking lot and continue up the hill. On your right, you'll see a trail marked with a blue fire sign labeled 02161. Follow that trail all the way to the tower. If you'd prefer a steeper, more adventurous route, several footpaths south of the building also lead up to the tower.
Distance/Time: 0.9 miles roundtrip, 30 minutes.
